Pastoral Care

A Whole‑School Commitment to Wellbeing

Our pastoral provision at Cranmore is at the heart of school life. We are committed to creating a safe, nurturing environment where every pupil feels supported, valued, and able to thrive both academically and personally.

Our pastoral care does not operate in isolation. At Cranmore, we work closely with parents, external agencies, and community partners to ensure that each pupil receives the support they need to thrive. Together, we create a caring and inclusive environment where every young person can feel confident, safe, and ready to succeed.

Leadership and Structure

Deputy Head (Pastoral)

Our pastoral system is led by the Deputy Head (Pastoral), who oversees the strategic development of wellbeing initiatives and ensures that high-quality care is embedded throughout the school.

Heads of Year

Each year group is supported by a dedicated Head of Year who provides oversight of pupils’ academic progress, personal development, behaviour, and wellbeing. They work closely with families to ensure that each pupil receives tailored support.

Tutor Team

Tutors are the first point of contact for pupils and families. Through daily tutor time, they build strong relationships with their tutor groups, monitor wellbeing, and provide guidance and encouragement. Tutors play a crucial role in early identification of concerns and in promoting a supportive community.

Specialist Support Services

School Nurses

Our school nurses offer medical care, health advice, and support for pupils with ongoing medical needs. They promote healthy lifestyles and work collaboratively with staff and families to ensure pupils feel safe and cared for.

School Counsellors

Our qualified counsellors provide confidential, therapeutic support for pupils experiencing emotional or mental health challenges. They work individually with pupils and contribute to our wider wellbeing strategy by offering guidance to staff and parents. A number of our staff are also Mental Health First Aid trained.

Chaplain

Cranmore’s Chaplain provides spiritual care and pastoral guidance to pupils of all faiths and none. Through assemblies, reflection opportunities, and a visible presence around school, the Chaplain supports pupils’ moral and spiritual development.

Curriculum Enrichment and Personal Development

PSHE Programme

Our extensive PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) curriculum equips pupils with the skills and knowledge they need to navigate the modern world. Topics include mental health, emotional literacy, digital citizenship, healthy lifestyles, and personal safety. It is enriched by guest speakers, workshops, and themed events that help build pupils’ confidence, awareness, and life skills.

RSE (Relationships and Sex Education)

Our age‑appropriate RSE programme promotes healthy relationships, respect, consent, and personal responsibility. It is delivered sensitively and in collaboration with parents, reflecting the values of our school community.

School Council

At Cranmore, we make a concerted effort to give children a voice, listening to them, respecting and responding to their views and, in so doing, enabling them to understand that their opinions count. The education system exists for children; ensuring their participation in that system and listening to their experiences helps them make the most of their education.

Our School Council is a made up of a dedicated team of hard-working pupils who strive to make a positive impact on their school. It is a forum for discussing pupil ideas to make our school a better place. They are also the driving force behind fundraising events which support both national and local charities. Pupils from each form are elected by their peers to represent their class for the course of the academic year.

Some recent developments include:

Senior School

  • New extra-curricular clubs following pupil requests
  • Additions to the lunch menu/themed lunches
  • A clock installed on the bus shelter in the main car park
  • Break time fundraising sale
  • Recycling facilities in the new building
Cranmore’s House System

Every pupil belongs to a House throughout their time at Cranmore, helping to build a strong sense of identity, belonging and community. Throughout the year, pupils work together to earn House points and celebrate their collective successes; however, it is the spirit of participation, enthusiasm and enjoyment that matters most. Being part of a House enriches each pupil’s experience and strengthens the supportive, inclusive culture of our school.

Cranmore hosts a wide range of engaging events that bring our House communities together. These include celebration assemblies, where pupils are recognised for their achievements, as well as House competitions that encourage healthy rivalry and team spirit. Through these events, pupils develop leadership skills, grow in confidence and build lasting friendships within their House.
